Over the past 27 years, as pastoral holdings in the Kimberley have come onto the market, indigenous interests have pursued opportunities to acquire them. Indigenous interests now own some 30% of the pastoral leases in the Kimberley. These purchases have been a response both to the aspirations of traditional owners to regain their traditional lands, and to enhance the economic position of the communities by using pastoralism as the basis of an economic development strategy.
